about

“RPMs 3x3” and “RPMs 4” are the continuation of a series of compositions for turntables that began in 2008. The original “RPMs” (May 2008) was released on a split cassette with Screwtape (Solar Anus, 2010), and “RPMs 2” (August 2008) was released on a cassette of the same name (Altered States, 2011). The basic structure of the “RPMs” series is a gradual increase in turntable speed settings (from 16, through 33, 45, to 78 RPMs), sometimes followed by a deceleration of speed (as in “RPMs 4”). This concept acts as a basic structure for exploration of different turntable settings, preparations and interactions. All four parts of the series released so far work primarily with layers of broken records/vinyl shards on each turntable, which creates a percussive yet chaotic effect as the tone arm skips from shard to shard, playing brief snatches of music from each. “RPMs 3x3” (October 2010) develops the series by introducing 3 turntables played simultaneously. “RPMs 4 (voices and hardware)” (December 2010) sees a change in the physical condition of one of these turntables (the cartridge was damaged, and the stylus has been replaced with a nail glued into the remains of the cartridge). The nail is put to good use at the end of the recording as it grinds into the metal on the edge of the turntable with the assistance of a screwdriver. Also with this latter piece, all vinyl shards layered each of the three turntables contained recordings where voices are prominent, in an attempt to create an indeterminate collage of voices. All recordings in the “RPMs” series are recorded live with no overdubs and only occasional minor editing.

“Turntables Are Wrong” (September 2010) was the accidental result of recording a dual turntable improvisation at input levels that were too high, resulting in a distorted sound that I ended up liking. “Summer Holiday 2010-11” (December 2010-January 2011), the only non-turntable piece on this CD, is a collage of field recordings made at a cricket match at the MCG, home, in the car, the beach at Skene’s Creek (Victoria), and in the streets of West Footscray - Clinton Green, May 2011.
