“Like Birds” takes as its source material a live duo of myself and Zac Keiller from 2006 (see Archive 9). This track edits the live recording, overlays some sections and tweaks levels to create this ambient guitar track, with some field recordings of birds (provided by Zac). I think I created this version, although possibly it was Zac. It was originally to be the title track of an LP proposed by a local label, which never saw the light of day; instead, it was used on Zac and my collaborative CD “Residential” (ZAC, 2009). The other two tracks from “Residential” - “Cloud Harvest” and the title track- are also included on this Archive.

The next few tracks are a good representation of my later guitar period music, where the guitar was used to generate very minimal source material that triggered more electronic sounds from digital delay and a couple of effects pedals, along with the deliberate inclusion of lead buzz. All recorded around March 2007, “First Journey” (built around the concept of setting up guitar and equipment, with lead buzz, amp thump, and guitar harmonics) and “Dots II” are previously unreleased, and “Non Play” was included on the “Bleak Metal” online compilation (New Weird Australia, 2011).

Tracks 5-6 are the result of a remote collaboration with American artist and instrument maker, Richard Wixner. “Canon” takes some recordings left over from the “Offering” CD (Shame File Music, 2003), manipulated here by Richard using his own patches and effects. “Cold Space” features Richard’s own instrument s, along with my guitar. These tracks are previously unreleased besides being featured for a time on Richard’s website.

Tracks 7-11 feature my first experiments with turntables, which would go on to be my main musical focus to the time of writing. All these recordings were made in May 2007.

“Broken Record Loops on Stereo Delay”, “Insomnia 1” and “Insomia 2” all use broken records layered on a turntable to produce chaotic sounds and rhythms, accompanied by live improvising bass (for track 7) or guitar (on tracks 10 & 11). This was the original idea of the layered broken records, to create an unpredictable “improvising machine” for live accompaniment. “If You Knew Susie” and “Music to Watch Girls By” (both named for some of the cheesy records/songs on the destroyed vinyl used) concentrate more on the vinyl shards themselves, without instrumental accompaniment. The latter track uses digital delay and mixer to create an electronic accompaniment. “Insomnia 1” and “Insomnia 2” made up the “Duos for Guitar and Broken Records” mini CD (Shame File Music, 2007), a limited edition of 52 copies with covers individually handmade from the record sleeves and shards of vinyl that created the music.

Tracks 12-17 of this Archive from 2007 is a kind of swansong of my guitar-focused work. “Live at Carni” is the only existing live recording from that year; recorded in Melbourne in August, it is a more minimalist version of the concept and techniques used on “First Journey”. “Impromptu” (October 2007), “Click and Forbode” and “Fingers and Thumbs” (both recorded in November 2007) traverse similar territory with guitar, effects and mixer. All are previously unreleased, bar “Click and Forbode”, which appeared on the “RPMs 2” cassette (Altered States, 2011). The final two tracks return to where this Archive began, in collaborations with Zac Keiller, released on our “Residential” CD. The source material for each is taken from improvised jam sessions, later edited into these two tracks; “Cloud Harvest” was edited by myself, “Residential” by Zac, both completed in late 2007. In retrospect, these tracks round out an era of my ambient guitar explorations in fine style.
